Samson Oghenewhoro, a patrol supervisor with a security company, is sacked and denied compensation after suffering disability in an on-the-job accident

For Samson Oghenewhoro, life will never be the same again. Never. Sufficient hints that a dire future awaits him have already been served. Since losing his job in January 2007, he has had no luck securing another. Sadly, it is not due to incompetence or lack of experience. Having spent 21 years in the security industry, Oghenewhoro is more than qualified. The hindrance, however, is the disability he suffered while on official duty in his last place of work, Around d Clock Security Company Limited, Lagos.

On 27 December, 2006, he was involved in a motorcycle accident while on patrol duty. The incident cost him two fingers.

There are also bodily scars. Oghenewhoro said he had gone on a routine supervision of the security units of all companies and residences that had contracts with Around d Clock and was about rounding off duty on the fateful day when he received a call from Mrs. Bukola Bamtefa, the Chief Executive Officer of the company, instructing him to embark on another round of patrol supervision of some of the company’s security guards and units on Victoria Island and environs.

“She asked if adequate security had been made, particularly for Seaview Properties, Ikoyi, who were one of our major clients on the Island. I answered in the affirmative, but she insisted I go there and then call her back when I was through,” he recalled.
