Nigerians from all walks of life doff their hats for Yoruba and Afenifere leader, Chief Abraham Adesanya, who passed on last month at the age of 85
By Francis Ottah Agbo
Chief Abraham Aderibigbe Adesanya, former Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Yoruba leader was born on 24 July 1922 in Ijebu-Igbo to the family of Pa Ezekiel Adesanya, a respected herbalist. He had his primary education at St. John’s African School, Oke-Agbe, Ijebu-Igbo between 1935 and 1938 from where he proceeded to Osogbo Methodist School where he obtained his standard six certificate.
Early in life, Apamaku, as Adesanya was fondly called, distinguished himself in religious studies while in school
After Adesanya passed out from Ijebu-Igbo Grammar School in 1944, his father wanted him to be a cleric. At a time when saying no to one’s father was considered a sacrilege, Adesanya defied his dad’s advice and forayed into teaching for some years.
While he was engrossed in his part time teaching, the Colonial era threw up a challenge for aggressive nationalist movement in Nigeria in preparation for political independence which Nigerians looked forward to with anticipation. But Adesanya knew if he must impact positively on post-independence Nigeria he must seek knowledge abroad. Law was his natural choice. He got admission in 1958 at the famous Holborn College of Law in the United Kingdom, returning to the country after graduation and thereafter playing active roles in the polity.
