The Democratic People’s Party in Sokoto State is back in court, challenging the decision of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party to re-field Alhaji Aliyu Magatakarda Wamako and Alhaji Mukhtari Shehu Shagari as its candidate for the fresh governorship election
By Tony Orilade/Abuja
The duo of Alhaji Aliyu Magatakarda Wamako and Alhaji Mukhtar Shehu Shagari, who until 11 April were the first and second citizens of Sokoto State respectively, are now fighting the battle of their lives. This followed the annulment of the state Governorship election by the Appeal Court sitting in Kaduna, which ordered a fresh election within 90 days.
Besides the annulment of Alhaji Wamako’s election, the Democratic People’s Party, DPP, in Sokoto State has splashed more mud on the personalities of Wamako and Shagari, insisting that both are not eligible to partake in a fresh election in the state.
Already, the party has gone to court to challenge the re-presentation of Wamako and Shagari on the ground that if Wamako was not qualified to participate in the 14 April 2007 election, he cannot be said to be qualified for a fresh election in the state. The DPP is further peeved at what it called ‘distortions of the terms of the decisions of the court as embodied in the lead judgment”. In an 11-page document from the chambers of Abdullahi Ibrahim and Company dated 17 April 2008, the party is praying the court to correct the distortions as contained in a publication which purports to be a certified true copy of the enrolled order of the judgment presided over by Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachwa.
