Commission Donates Relief Materials To Refugees

The honourable commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Hajiya Hadiza Kangiwa Sani has donated relief materials worth millions of naira to refugees at Madagbasi community in Kwande local government area council of Benue State.

Presenting the items, Sani said the visit was a follow-up to its previous visit to verify and access the condition of the refugees due to reports received from the Red Cross Society, government of Benue State, as well as other security agencies demanding assistance.

Hon. Sani who described refugees issue as grass cutting with grave consequences on both the host community and the displaced persons, stressed that President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s government is very much committed to peace, and security of the nation, and so has redoubled its efforts at improving the condition of living of both its citizens and refugees. She further revealed government’s plan to relocate the refugees to a better place where government, and other voluntary organisations can easily reach out to them, as well as ensure adequate security to prevent further lost of lives of both refugees and their host community until the situation is stabilised in Cameroon.

In her words, "The issue is all about burden sharing, and so the load should not be bone by one party. Government at all levels, civil society groups, and individuals must rise up to this occasion to avoid future predicament and workout strategic method which would bring comfort to both parties.
The Commissioner, however, expressed appreciation to the people of Tyuan-in kurav-ya community for their accommodating, and hospitable nature.

Speaking earlier, the council chairman, Hon. Terlumun Akputu JP disclosed that Kwande local government shares border with Cameroun Republic especially the southern part.

He said he was alerted of the influx of the refugees two months ago by the United Nations, and their local security operations. He said reasons given were that two communities in the area were at war due to land dispute, which resulted to the dominating group running to Obanliku in Cross River State, while the Oyeive the minority group flee to Tyuav community in Benue State.

Hon. Akputu, who thanked the Commission for their quick response to their plight, said, he believes that her visit would mark an end the their travail. The council boss spoke bitterly on the poor living condition of his people in terms of basic amenities.

Speaking further, he stressed the need for security, as he revealed that Cameroonian authorities were having illegal meeting with the Refugees in Nigeria, breaching the countries sovereignty as they could possibly launch an attack on them.

The district head of Tyuav community, Chief Akoso Obam, used the forum to appeal President Yar'Adua to re-integrate them and provide all necessary amenities to foster development in the area, as they often see themselves as strangers, in their own land.

The Chief of Yive in the South-West part of Cameroun, Chief Small Avo acknowledged governments effort in giving them comfort, adding that Cameroonian government is relaxed, on the issue. He pleaded with Nigerian government to stir up their Cameroonian government) into action.
Meanwhile, the executive governor of Benue State, Hon. Gabriel Suswam who was represented by secretary to the state government, Alhaji Audu Achigili, said federal government should quicken their steps to ensure that both government come to consensus.

He said, plans should be put in place to assist the local government by providing adequate security.
