SIX Nigerians killed last year while serving as United Nations international peacekeepers were honoured posthumously yesterday at the headquarters of the world body, just as the UN officially confirmed the appointment of Nigeria's Lt-General Chikadibia Obiakor as the new Military Adviser of the organization.

The celebrations of 60 years of active UN peacekeeping operations also ended yesterday with the presentation of the UN medals to a total of 90 UN peacekeepers who died in active service last year.

In 1997, to mark the 50th Anniversary of peacekeeping in 1998, the UN Security Council established the Dag Hammarskjold Medal, which since then has been awarded yearly to fallen peacekeepers. Dag Hammarskjold was the second UN Secretary-General in office between 1953 and 1961.

The six UN troops from Nigeria honoured were Lance Corporal Lawal Ahmadu who died on January 10, last year; Corporal Ogbonnia Ewa who died May 29, 2007; Sergeant David Igbogi who died June 21, 2007 and Sergeant Andrew Hassan who died on November 22, 2007. They all died in Liberia.

Others are Assistant Comptroller of Immigration, Dubem Ume who also died in Liberia on July 24, 2007 and a Nigerian police officer, ASP Apaah Daniel Yongo, who died on April 1, 2007 in Timor-Leste.

Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the UN, Professor Joy Ogwu and Defence Adviser of Nigeria to the UN, General Benedict Taiwo Obasa received the awards on behalf of the fallen heroes.
Their names are inscribed on UN walls at the famous UN Visitors' Lounge where an exhibition on UN peacekeeping missions is also on as part of events marking the 60th year.

A statement in memory of the fallen soldiers is also pasted on the UN walls, saying: "In honour of their memory, we - the UN dedicate ourselves to continuing their mission, at Headquarters and in the field. We share the grief of their loved ones and pledge ourselves to ensuring that their sacrifice in the service of the United Nations will not have been in vain."

United Nations officials are marking the International Day of UN Peacekeepers by voicing gratitude for the work that Blue Helmets do every day in dangerous missions worldwide and mourning those who have fallen in service during the past six decades.

"Peacekeeping has developed into a flagship enterprise of our Organization, " Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said in an official message to mark the day
